Former scholars round up (06/12/20)

With barely any games played over the past month due to lockdown restrictions wiping out 'non-elite' football, this might be the shortest round-up yet involving the whereabouts of lads who were once on the books at Doncaster Rovers.

To begin with, Mitchell Lund is expected to be out of action for around four months having had an operation to repair his eye socket and cheekbone which was fractured in several places during Bradford Park Avenue's clash with Telford United on 21st November. The defender, who had played in every minute of every game this season for BPA up to the incident, is now expected to return sometime around Easter. Needless to say, everyone wishes him the best of luck in his recovery!

Two players have been on the move with Cameron Foulkes signing for Staveley Miners Welfare in the NCEL (Premier Division) following a spell at Bottesford Town. Conner Williamson has also re-signed for Rossington Main from local rivals Armthorpe Welfare who, coincidentally, have just appointed a new boss in Lee Morris but ex-scholar Adam Lee, who was in caretaker charge, has been retained as part of the first team management set-up.

Conner Williamson battles to win the ball during his DRFC days.

Elsewhere, other lads fortunate enough to be competing at 'elite level' have, on the whole, endured some difficult results since the last round-up.

Will Longbottom couldn't quite help Waterford claim a place in Europe for next season as they critically lost 1-0 at Finn Harps on the final day of the season. If they'd won then it would have been good enough because Dundalk, who finished two points ahead of them in a qualifying spot, also lost in their final game against Sligo Rovers.

At Chesterfield, Liam Mandeville and Jack McKay have seen off another manager with John Pemberton losing his job just days before a humbling 3-2 defeat to Notts County where the Spireites snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by conceding two goals deep into injury-time! Neither player has featured much over the past month and will have to impress new boss James Rowe, if they're to get more game-time.

Eastleigh are at the opposite end of the table to Chesterfield (as are most teams for that matter!) and Andrew Boyce has been something of a defensive linchpin for them for a while now. The 31-year-old has played three games over the past month - the most recent of which was yesterday's surprise 1-0 home reverse to Maidenhead United. Eastleigh are in 8th position in the National League.

In League Two, Jonny Maxted has played in Exeter City's last couple of games though a 4-1 away success at Grimsby Town came just four days before a humbling 5-3 defeat at probable promotion rivals Cheltenham Town. At Harrogate Town, Jack Muldoon is amongst the division's top scorers and currently has eight goals for the campaign - two of which have been in the past month in a draw against Crawley Town (where Max Watters scored) and also in last week's 5-2 home reverse to Scunthorpe United.

It's been a while since James Husband pulled on a DRFC shirt, but despite having already received two red cards this season, he did play at the Keepmoat Stadium last month as his Blackpool team were beaten 3-2. Husband, 26, has now amassed 186 league appearances and providing there's no more red cards, should get beyond the 200 barrier by the end of the season.

In Scotland, Paul McKay has been an ever-present for Airdrieonians this term. The Diamonds are fourth in Scottish League One after seven games though they were on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline at East Fife yesterday.

The last mention must go to a very familiar striker who got on the score-sheet AGAINST Rovers in last month's aforementioned win over Blackpool. Jerry Yates, part of the academy set-up throughout the 2000s up to Under 15s level, scored from the penalty spot to take his tally to five goals for the season and, at the same time, ensure he'll be remembered by many fans as 'one that got away' to coin the old phrase.

But good on him and long may the goals continue!
